Michael Mitchell is a highly accomplished attorney with a distinguished career in both private practice and federal law enforcement. A native of Wisconsin, Michael moved to Chicago to attend Chicago-Kent College of Law, where he earned his J.D. Upon graduating, he began his legal career at a prestigious Chicago-based law firm, gaining valuable experience in a range of complex legal matters. His early years in private practice allowed him to refine his skills in litigation and client service, setting the stage for the next phase of his career.

Seeking to deepen his legal expertise and commitment to public service, Michael transitioned to a role with the United States Department of Justice. He served as a federal prosecutor in the Southern District of Texas and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he was entrusted with the prosecution of high-stakes criminal cases. During his time with the DOJ, Michael handled a wide array of cases, including those involving narcotics trafficking, firearms offenses, cybercrime, crimes against children, money laundering, violent crime, and fraud.

Michael’s work as a prosecutor included managing first-chair and second-chair jury trials, where he successfully represented the government in a number of high-profile criminal cases. His responsibilities also involved extensive pre-trial motion practice, where he responded to complex motions for summary judgment, motions to dismiss, and presented oral arguments in court

Among his many accomplishments, Michael was honored with the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Texas Award for Superior Performance by a Litigative Team in 2022. This award recognized his outstanding performance as part of a team responsible for prosecuting complex criminal cases with significant public impact. His ability to manage complex cases through every phase of litigation, combined with his comprehensive understanding of criminal law and procedural rules, made him a highly respected figure within the Department of Justice (DOJ).

At this moment, Michael transitioned to join Whitewood Law, where he continues to build on his extensive experience in litigation. His prior work in both federal prosecution and private legal practice provides him with a unique and powerful perspective, making him an invaluable asset to his clients and a trusted advocate in the legal community.
